For many operators, electronic brake performance monitoring systems (EBPMS) have already become essential for supporting compliance, improving visibility and reducing the administrative burden of brake testing. But as fleets push for greater efficiency, uptime and reliability, the industry is increasingly looking for technology that can predict issues—not just record them.

WEMS is AXSCEND’s newest enhancement to the SAF CONNECTED ecosystem, providing real time monitoring of both brake wear and wheel end temperature. This added layer of intelligence gives operators earlier insight into developing issues that would typically remain hidden until a routine inspection, workshop visit or, in the worst cases, a roadside failure.

The technology reflects a wider shift across the transport sector: operators want to understand not only how assets are performing today, but how emerging problems can be identified before they impact fleet availability tomorrow. This is especially critical at the wheel end, where some of the most disruptive and costly failures originate.

Issues such as brake drag, sticking components, bearing deterioration and excessive heat build up often develop gradually. Traditionally, these faults have been detected through periodic inspections, driver reporting and workshop expertise—methods that provide only snapshots of asset condition.

WEMS changes this by enabling continuous monitoring of critical wheel end components. By tracking brake wear and temperature behaviour across the axle set, the system highlights abnormal thermal patterns that can signal early stage faults long before they become operationally significant.

For workshop managers, this means earlier intervention, more efficient maintenance planning and reduced unplanned downtime. For operators, it means improved reliability, better asset utilisation and greater confidence in the health of their trailer fleet.

AXSCEND will be demonstrating WEMS and the wider SAF CONNECTED ecosystem throughout Road Transport Expo, giving visitors the opportunity to see the technology in action and understand how real time wheel end intelligence can transform fleet performance.
